Design for Living: The Curved Sofa Lives On

Interiors seem to have finally taken a turn from mid-century minimalism to reveling in a more sensual moment of curved sofas covered in sumptuous velvets. I’m seeing curved sofas everywhere, no doubt inspired by the Iconic Serpentine sofa created by Vladimir Kagan, the avant garde artist/sculptor/furniture maker.

Mr Kagan was a pioneer of modern design during the mid-20th century, who, as Wendy Goodman, design editor at New York Magazine noted - “understood that modernism does not have to be austere.” His designs eventually fell out of favor in the 1960’s. Tom Ford, Gucci’s design director from 1994 - 2004 was responsible for resurrecting Kagan’s singular style by placing the Omnibus sofa in all the Gucci stores.

More recently, curvaceous sofas have become popular with styles to accommodate every budget. I find these sofa designs refreshing, inviting, and appreciate their lounge-y sensibility. Add low profile arm-chairs for a stylized pairing. Carry the curves through to coffee and side tables that together create an appealing look that’s suddenly very modern.
