What I'm Reading Right Now - Sargent: Portraits of Artists & Friends

I'm currently reading the fantastic Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends about the celebrated American artist, John Singer Sargent.  A beautifully illustrated book written by Richard Ormond with Elaine Kilmurray coincides with an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, June 30 - October 4 2015 of the same title.  Not only a painter of portraits celebrating American and European high society, Sargent also made numerous portraits, often not commissioned, of his friends, who were writers, actors, artists and musicians.

This week's New York Magazine Fashion issue features an article with Kehinde Wiley, a highly regarded artist with a worldwide following, and an upcoming retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum.  Wiley is famous for painting classically inspired portraits of contemporary black men with dazzling results.  In 2011 he completed a series with 7 black women - "over the next several months, Wiley photographed them, had them fitted for haute couture gowns by Riccardo Tischi at Givenchy, then painted them large scale, in works modeled after French and British portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries."

Living With Art - Art Basel 2014

Art Basel, held in Miami Beach for the 13th year, December 4th - 7th received an estimated 75,000 attendees.  It's an event that draws people from all over the world and is as much about socializing and connecting as it is about the art.  Art Basel, the main fair, is held in the Convention Center and Design Miami sits across the way.  Eighteen satellite fairs are scattered throughout Miami Beach and Wynwood in downtown Miami.
